MID-DAY MUSIC AT MELVILLE

The music series “Mid-Day Music at Melville” will continue at Melville United Church in Fergus on each Wednesday in November.  Pianist Brad Halls is taking the audience on a musical tour through the past 100 years of the history of the Broadway musical, with a presentation of the many enduring classic songs from some of the greatest of the past century’s songwriters.  Each performance begins at 12 noon and continues to about 1 p.m.

On November 15, you can enjoy songs from the Broadway show of 1937 and 1938 by Rodgers and Hart from their productions of Babes in Arms, The Boys from Syracuse, as well as well loved standards such as September Song, I’ll Be Seeing You, My Heart Belongs to Daddy and others.

On November 22, our concert will feature songs from Broadway shows produced during the early years of World War II from 1939 to 1942.  From songwriters like Vernon Duke, Kurt Weill, Cole Porter and others, come popular songs such as All the Things You Are, Taking a Chance on Love, How High the Moon and Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered, and several more.

And on our final November date, November 29, we will examine the Broadway seasons of 1943 to 1945, which will feature the first collaboration by composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein, with their overwhelmingly popular productions of Oklahoma! and Carousel.  Other productions include Kurt Weill’s One Touch of Venus, and Leonard Bernstein’s On the Town among others.

There is no admission charge for these presentations, but a voluntary contribution to Melville United to help keep the heat ad lights on, and the piano tuned, is always gratefully received.
