presented and performed by pianist
BRAD HALLS
The music series “Mid-Day Music at Melville” has resumed for its 4th season of concerts, and performances will be held on each Wednesday in October. Pianist and singer Brad Halls presents these events each Wednesday at Melville United Church, commencing at 12 noon and continuing until about 1p.m. For this season Brad is looking at a theme of “Songwriters’ Inspirations”, and each week (or occasionally for two weeks) the weekly theme will vary. The series opened last week on October 1 with “Around the World” – a look at great popular songs featuring exotic locales around our planet and the theme will continue on Wednesday, October 8 with a program of songs including Autumn in New York, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans and Canadian themed songs Cape St. Mary’s and Song of the Mira among others.
On Wednesday, October 15, we begin a two-week focus entitled Fly Me to the Moon, with some of the hundreds of songs written about the romantic influence of the Moon. The first week will feature our title song Fly Me to the Moon, as well as great standards I Wished on the Moon, It’s Only a Paper Moon, Old Devil Moon and many more. The following week on Wednesday, October 22, the theme concludes with more lunar influences with hits such as On Moonlight Bay, Moonlight Becomes You, How High the Moon, Moonlight in Vermont and many more.
The month’s concerts concludes on Wednesday, October 29, with a program entitled The Sweetest Sounds, which will includes Fats Waller’s Honeysuckle Rose, and classic standards including Ain’t She Sweet, Sweet Lorraine, A Taste of Honey, Sweet Georgia Brown, and the title song The Sweetest Sounds by Richard Rodgers.
There is no admission charge for any of these presentations, but a voluntary contribution to Melville United to help keep the heat and lights on, and the piano tuned, is always gratefully received.
