Mid-Day Music At Melville
The music series “Mid-Day Music at Melville” will present the final concerts of this 2nd “season” during the month of April, following which we will take a summer break, and plan to resume for our 3rd season on the first Wednesday of October. Pianist Brad Halls has been taking the audience on a musical tour through the past 100 years of the history of the Broadway musical, with a presentation of the many enduring classic songs from some of the greatest of the past century’s songwriters. Each performance begins at 12 noon and continues to about 1 p.m.
On Wednesday, April 3, the songs come from the Broadway seasons between 1981 and 1987 and will feature songs from record-breaking productions such as,”Cats”, “Les Miserables”, “La Cage aux Folles”, “Woman of the Year” and more. Come and enjoy many memorable songs such as “Memory”, ”I Am What I Am”, “Bring Him Home”,”I Dreamed a Dream” and many more.
On Wednesday, April 10, we will celebrate productions from Broadway shows which debuted between 1988 and 1994 Those seasons were highlighted by Stephen Sondheim’s ”Into the Woods”, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera”, “The Secret Garden”, and “Miss Saigon”. We will hear songs including “The Music of the Night”, “Children Will Listen”, “All I Ask of You” and more.
Our 2nd season of concerts will come to a finish on Wednesday, April 17, when we will visit productions from Broadway seasons after 1995. Highlighted productions will include “Rent”, “Jekyll and Hyde”, “Ragtime”, ”The Producers”, “Wicked” and others.
We wish to thank everyone in our audience who have attended one, some (and for some even all) of our concerts this past season. Thank you to the audience for their generous voluntary donations to Melville United Church which have helped us enjoy this beautiful setting for these concerts.
We will be back with our 3rd series of concerts, beginning on the 1st Wednesday in October. Somewhat similar to this past season, next year we will take a musical tour through the history of “Music from the Movies”, and we can enjoy the dozens if not hundreds of enduring music from the last century of films including popular songs, jazz standards, and some of the great “theme music” from non-musical films.
There is no admission charge for these presentations, but a voluntary contribution to Melville United to help keep the heat and lights on, and the piano tuned, is always gratefully received.
