MID-DAY MUSIC AT MELVILLE

The music series “Mid-Day Music at Melville” will resume at Melville United Church in Fergus on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 and continue on Wednesdays thereafter. Pianist Brad Halls is taking the audience on a musical tour through the past 100 years of the history of the Broadway musical, with a presentation of the many enduring classic songs from some of the greatest of the past century’s songwriters. Each performance begins at 12 noon and continues to about 1 p.m.

On Wednesday, March 6, the songs come from the Broadway seasons of 1965 and 1966 and will feature songs from memorable productions such as “Man of La Mancha”, ”Mame”, “Sweet Charity”, ”Mame” and others. Come and enjoy many classic songs such as “If He Walked Into My Life”, “Hey Big Spender”, ”On a Clear Day”, “My Cup Runneth Over and many more.

On Wednesday, March 13, we will celebrate productions from Broadway shows which debuted between 1967 and 1970. Those seasons were highlighted by Stephen Sondheim’s ”Company”, Burt Bacharach’s “Promises, Promises”, “Applause”, ”George M!”, and the revolutionary “Hair”. We will include classic songs including “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again”, “Being Alive”, “The Age of Aquarius”, a medley of songs by George M. Cohan and more.

On Wednesday, March 20, we will visit productions from Broadway seasons between 1971 and 1975. Brad will present songs from musicals including “Godspell”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, the record setting “A Chorus Line”, and two productions by Stephen Sondheim –“Follies” and “A Little Night Music” among others. Featured songs include “Broadway Baby”, Day by Day”, “All That Jazz”, “What I Did for Love”, and “Send in the Clowns” among several others.

On Wednesday, March 27, we will celebrate productions from Broadway shows which debuted between 1976 and 1979.  Those seasons included the Broadway openings of shows such as “Annie”, “Evita”, ”Sweeney Todd”, “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and others.  Wonderful songs from these shows include “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina”, “The Colours of My Life”, “Pretty Women”, a medley of songs by the legendary “Fats” Waller, and almost a dozen more.

          There is no admission charge for these presentations, but a voluntary contribution to Melville United to help keep the heat and lights on, and the piano tuned, is always gratefully received.
