Worship & Music

Celebrating God’s love, our worship is active and expressed in a variety of ways every day.

Worship

Sunday Worship is at 11:00am

Our Worship Service offers a safe, inclusive time to focus on God in a communal experience. Whether you have attended church your whole life, or you are hoping to begin a faith journey, our worship service includes traditional and contemporary prayers, presentations and music that help us invite the Spirit and feel God’s presence. Weekly themes are selected from the Common Lectionary and Social Justice topics that renew the soul and prepare us for the week ahead.

See the What Can I Expect section below for answers to common questions.

Music

Music is an integral part of worship at Melville.  Music for our Sunday worship service, accompanied by the piano or pipe organ, is a mix of traditional and contemporary hymns and songs. Music choices are intended to enhance and extend the message of our themes. Our music allows individuals to participate in a meaningful, personal way.

Choir

Melville’s Choir, made up of individuals who enjoy singing, meets frequently, throughout the year, usually Thursday evening, to practice inspirational songs. The choir is directed by Colleen Weber, an incredibly talented pianist and organist. The choir supports congregational singing, and presents a variety of beautiful works for our multi-generational congregation. The choir is always looking for new members.

Spirit Sings Band

This is a small group, accompanied by piano or guitar who occasionally shares their faith and love of contemporary Christian music with our congregation. Spirit Sings is directed by Suzanne Flewelling, a very skillful and versatile pianist. Suzanne also invites special music presentations and groups for worship. Spirit Sings is always looking for singers and musicians.

*If you love singing and are interested in being part of a fun, dedicated group, please contact our office.

Kids’ Church

Melville offers a weekly, inclusive program for children, ages four years and up. On Sundays, children begin as part of the congregation, participating in prayers and songs. They listen to a theme conversation, then gather in the Upper Auditorium as a group, where they enthusiastically participate in activities, such as bible investigations, storytelling, drama, arts and crafts. Kids’ Church is led by Ann Ward. Ann shares her extensive experience in Visual and Dramatic Arts as she prepares and implements lessons. The overall focus of our Kids’ Church program is learning from Bible stories and Jesus’ teachings of justice. Children are encouraged to express what they have learned and to live out these lessons during the week.

Nursery

Melville has a bright, beautiful Nursery space with lots of toys for younger children to play with. Currently parents of younger children are invited to use this space with their child during our service.

What Can I Expect?

New to our worship services? Not sure what to expect? Check out our frequently asked questions.

How will I know what to do?

When you arrive, one of our greeters will give you a printed outline of the morning’s activities. You’ll find it also has information about things going on in the church. Words and information are also projected at the front of the worship space (the Sanctuary). The worship leaders will give clear instructions for everyone to follow along.

What should I wear?

Come as you are. We have no dress code. Some folks dress up; some folks dress down. What you wear is entirely up to you!

Where do I sit?

Wherever you like. None of our seats are reserved. We do ask you to respect others’ need for physical distancing, as we continue keeping one another safe.

Do I need to bring money?

You don’t need to. As our guest, sharing your time with us is the gift we are most thankful for. If you’d like to give, we have an offering plate at the entrance to the sanctuary. Please put your offering there.

What happens after worship?

Following the worship service we often gather as a community in a time of refreshment and conversation. This is a great time to meet new people and develop relationships. We hope you will join us!

How do I know if worship is cancelled?

Occasionally, for the safety of worshippers and staff, we have to cancel Sunday worship due to bad weather, a power outage, or other unforeseen event.

If conditions are bad, please use your best judgment about going out. Be safe!

Decisions about cancelling will be made by HH:MM am/pm, and will be posted on our website and FB page.
